Thank you for polluting

Posted in Miscellaneous on November 30th, 2007 by Jan

I’ve often wondered why people insist on letting their cars run when:

  • they’re in a shop, noone in the car
  • waiting in front of a bridge that’s up or a train crossing
  • standing still in a huge traffic jam
  • waiting in a closed (underground?) parking lot for someone/something

Don’t they get that they’re polluting like hell and wasting tons of gas? (And definitely in closed areas, it’s very unhealthy) And then people complain about gas prices, about pollution.. but doing _anything_ to help a bit? Naaah, too hard.

Meh, humanity. Doomed we are.

Wordpress Widgets!

Posted in Software-related, WordPress on November 25th, 2007 by Jan

I just finished creating three new WordPress Widget Plugins. Some are conversions of older plugins I made for Wordpress, one is brand stinkin’ new.

The initlal motivation for creating these was that Sade (my SO) wanted to use the Flexo Archives Widget to make the archives links look better. Unfortunately, the widget approach is an all-or-nothing approach: either you do it all in widget way, or you don’t do widgets at all. (yes I know, this is not 100% correct, but good enough for now). Since she used several older plugins to display information in the sidebar, this wasn’t ideal.

So I set out creating the needed widgets ;)

Some technical blabla: Widget plugins are plugins that sit in your sidebar, and you can easily modify the order of your sidebar without having to edit the sidebar.php file that comes with your theme. Even better: if your theme supports it, the sidebar will look identical, no matter what theme you use!

To use it, log in as administrator and go to Presentation -> Widgets.

Now, without further delay, my widgets, which you can see in action on Sade’s Blog:

  • Countdown Widget: This widget will count down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until events you can set in the configuration.
  • Projects Widget: This widget shows project status, in percentages, and also a bar-graph. You can choose between four colours for the bargraph.
  • Webrings Widget: This widget will display your webrings, with the usual next/previous/random/list links. Optionally you can set a picture instead of the name.

You can find them all here, on kcore.org (my main website).

One week of working!

Posted in Work on November 24th, 2007 by Jan

After one week of working again, here’s a quick .. urr.. reviewish kind of thingy:

Trains suck. Really. Comon, it can’t be THAT hard to get a train to be on time for atleast the majority of time, not the other way around. I’ve taken the train 10 times this week, of which it was too late 7 times. Not what I’d call a good track record. (track record.. get it? .. nevermind)

I’m damn tired every evening. Guess I still have to get used to the working cycle again…

It’s great to have work! Yay! I have things to do that I find interesting! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :p

Mac is back… again…

After they screwed a screw in my previous repair, it’s back again. I’ve checked it, nothing’s loose, everything seems to be in order. Let’s hope it is!

Prius prejudice

Posted in Cars, Prius on November 17th, 2007 by Jan

What’s with people and their prejudice against the Prius?

People first ask me what car I bought, then usually give me one of the following answers:

  • Ewwwwww (and all it’s variations)
  • Thats a car for old people!
  • Such an ugly thing!
  • Hybrid? So you have to plug it in at home?

and countless others.

You also have the other kind of answers:

  • Cool! Eco!
  • Wow, congratz

but those are still in the minority.

Please, people, get informed before formulating your opinions at me. Thank you, please run along now.
